Hello dear Reader,
“Leveling up” - The first time I heard that term in my critique group, I assumed it meant getting to the next level so my ears perked up. But how do we get there? This month my colleagues are writing all about how to level up and breaking down the steps. I encourage you to check out the Illoguild newsletters.
As for me, I’m taking a slightly different twist and decided to write about vacations! Growing up in a large family, vacations were a luxury we couldn’t afford. The first time I was on a plane was when I went away to college. When I started working full time, I looked forward to vacations. After all, vacations provide many benefits:
* Stress reduction - a break from the daily grind and routines
* Improved mental health - better mood and psyche
* Enhanced creativity - experiencing new areas
* Increased productivity - a relaxed mind increases productivity upon return
* Personal growth - exploring new cultures providing new learning and discovery
* Bonding time - strengthens family and loved ones and creates memories that outlasts the vacation
My husband and I recently attended a family reunion in Ireland, savoring the beautiful sunsets, and vibrant towns of Galway, Dublin, Dingle, Killarney and Kerry. My father was born there, one of 12 siblings and we visited the farm where he grew up, meeting relatives for the first time. The trip was filled with connection, tradition, storytelling and a special bond that will stay with me forever.
But what does this have to do with leveling up? Before I left, I was in the finishing stages of illustrating a picture book, CECELIA SAYS NO, a story of friendship and boundaries. Having that deadline forced me to work overtime and scramble to complete all the illustrations before I went. I did feel a little guilty, leaving right before a book launch, but the time away filled my spirits, rejuvenated my mind and motivated me to work extra hard upon my return.
I’m sharing a few pictures from my recent trip to Ireland, which included a little escape to London and a visit to the house where my Dad grew up — a home without running water! Back in the 1940’s, they would draw water from the running stream behind the farm to heat it up in the fireplace.
This journey has deepened my respect for our history, traditions, and appreciation for modern technology. Though both my parents have passed on, this trip rekindled a longing for the stories and songs they used to share. My heart feels fuller, and my mind more open. As I return to my creative space, carrying these memories I find myself inspired, uplifted and ready to create from a place of newfound growth. That to me is leveling up.
I would love to hear from you dear Reader, how you define, “leveling up.”
“What other people label or might try to call failure I have learned is just God’s way of pointing you in a new direction.” Oprah Winfrey
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso.
I would like to add vacations to that thought! After an inspiring journey through Ireland, I’m back at my desk today, focusing on completing the final touches on CECELIA SAYS NO.
Thank you dear Reader for accompanying me on this journey. I know there have been moments when you stepped out of your comfort zone and often, that’s where we experience our most profound growth. I never imagined I was ready to illustrate a children’s book but with some nudging and support of my critique group, I dived in. There have been highs and lows, and at times when I felt like giving up, but in those moments, I found the strength to focus and push through. And now, here I am — it’s launch month for CECELIA!
What’s your next step? I’d love for you to share it in the comments. Remember, we’re all in this together! We can do this!
