Our theme for November is “thankfulness.” Each month, my illustrating group, aka, the Illoguild, dedicates time to a meaningful topic. I love this theme of thanksgiving because it’s something I try to practice daily. I’m deeply thankful for you, my readers and supporters. Sharing this journey together is something I don’t take for granted.
Years ago, during a tough time filled with negative thoughts and emotions, I started a simple habit. Each night before bed, I would recall five things I was thankful for that day. In the morning, before stepping out of bed, I’d think of five more. My gratitude list often includes family—if I named each one, that alone could fill my list! Other days, it’s my health, my home and being able to carve out time for writing and drawing that I’m thankful for. But it’s easy to let gratitude slip into the background. Then I catch myself focusing on what I don’t have, which leads to nowhere. I realize how destructive that is and recognize it’s time to reset by taking a walk or a workout to shift my mind in a more positive, creative space.
Last month, I had the privilege of attending a Writing Retreat with my critique partners. One of them lives out in the Pacific Northwest near the Puget Sound. Three of us spent time writing, drawing, sharing meals, exploring the breathtaking area and taking time for a few short walks and sightseeing in the surrounding area. Her home is a writer’s dream with boats and sunsets right outside the window. The stunning sunrises, rainbows and reflections were a treasure and everything I’d always dreamed a writer’s workshop would be!
I’m attaching a few pictures from our Writers Workshop because they can paint a thousand words!
“Writing is magic, as much the water of life, as any other creative art. The water is free. So drink. Drink and be filled up.” —Stephen King
I’ve been starting to schedule school visits and story times with my latest book, CECELIA SAYS NO when friendship and boundaries collide. I also had a meet and greet and story time at a local Senior Center at Lake Barrington Woods. It was a quiet crowd but it was delightful. I met a lovely woman, Joanna, 100 years old (pictured below) who had a lot of stories to share herself and was a natural storyteller! In an effort to give back to my community, I will continue to do story times at some of the local retirement and senior centers along with some school visits. Many times, the goodness comes back to you in ways you didn’t even expect.
As the day after our national election, I feel a deep appreciation for my country. When I look back, I can’t believe it’s only been a little over 100 years that we celebrate the right for women to vote! No nation is perfect, yet we live in a place that allows us the freedom to grow, embrace our diversity, and pursue our individual paths. I’m grateful to have raised my family here, where they enjoy freedom that comes with mutual respect, regardless of race, color or creed. The ability to worship openly knowing my neighbors or colleagues can do the same in their own way, is something I do not take for granted. Today, especially, I’m reminded of the gift living in a nation that welcomes a range of voices and visions and the opportunity we all have to keep building on our shared values. Regardless of how one voted, I have respect for my fellow Americans. We can fight for a vision for our country of hope and opportunity for all. God bless the USA.
I do hope that you leave a comment below to share what you are grateful for and what methods have been working for you. Your insights mean a lot and inspire my own journey. I learn so much from my colleagues and readers.
Next month, I’m thrilled to share a sneak peak of my new picture book, CECELIA TAKES FLIGHT from the drawing board to the sky. It’s a story for anyone who has ever dared to dream big—a reminder that with a bit of planning, work and a sprinkle of magic, dreams can take off! I can’t wait to take you along on Cecelia’s new adventure!
